Yale’s clerical and technical union, Local 34-UNITE HERE, published “Artificial University”, a report arguing that generative AI and management practice are eroding clerical work through what it calls passive automation: membership peaked at 4,112 in April 2025, Yale imposed a hiring freeze in June 2025, and the unit now stands at 3,933 — a 4.4% decline with no layoffs.

Data

  • Membership: 4,112 (Apr 2025) → 3,933 (-4.4%)
  • Mechanism: hiring freeze + vacancies left unfilled, not terminations
  • The report ties the freeze to AI-driven restructuring of administrative work

Counter

This is a union report published in a bargaining context — the incentive to foreground automation threat is real. Universities face federal funding pressure and post-pandemic budget normalization, and a 4.4% decline over 18 months is within normal attrition drift for a large institution. Whether AI is the marginal cause or a convenient label is exactly what Yale and the union will fight over.

Verdict

Watch the mechanism, not the magnitude. “Passive automation” is the same pattern the FT just documented in Philippine call centres and the same one implied in Anthropic’s junior-hiring collapse: employment shrinks at the hiring edge, through seats never filled, which keeps it invisible in layoff statistics. Three sectors, one mechanism.
